Pigs as a potential source of emerging livestock-associated Staphylococcus aureus in Africa: a systematic review

ObjectiveTo assess the emergence of livestock-associated Staphylococcus aureus including methicillin-resistant S. (MRSA) in pig and pork production systems Africa for past two decades.MethodsPubMed African Journals OnLine were searched relevant primary studies from 2000 to 2019 using standardized key words. In total, 19 eligible articles included this review.ResultsThe prevalence MRSA ranged 0% 55% among live pigs raw pork, 9.4% 30.8% farm abattoir workers. Risk factors associated with carriage workers were: male gender, working an abattoir, medical-related occupation a household member. are potentially pathogenic diverse spa types clonal complexes, genes encoding antimicrobial resistance, heavy metal virulence secreted enterotoxins, proteases immune evasion cluster.
